Cornucopia 2017 – More is definitely better!

Cornucopia has been the reason for many non-skiers and food & wine enthusiasts such as myself to go to Whistler in November. It is in fact my annual ritual to kick off the cold season. I do consider early November at Whistler is the bridge season when summer sports are over and ski season is not yet to unveiled so it is relatively quiet and good deals are to be had. While the winter beauty of the villages is descending, a different kind of atmosphere is gathered up there this time of the year.


Tourism Whistler and the organizers of Cornucopia has been doing a great job. From a weekend event to a 11-day extravaganza, more and more alluring events have been added. With the events now span over two weekends, the chance of you making it to a day or two or more of Cornucopia increases substantially. Do not forget that this is no longer a food and wine-focused only festival but those seeking finer lifestyle and leisurely rhythms are taken care of too.


From November 9 to 19 this year, Whistler will become festival central in West Coast with over 100 events to choose from: Chef Table Luncheon, Culinary Stage demos and cooking classes, Winemaker Dinners, Drink Seminars, Nourish Health & Wellness activities, Night Parties, Restaurant Events and Signature Tastings, to name a few. Better go online to check out the full schedule.  The highly rated Cellar Door Tasting showcasing premium wines on Friday the 10th will ignite the festival mood. Other not-to-missed wine-tastings events are The Crush Gala Tasting and Pour Grand Tasting. The Night Market – Taste of the World taking place on the second Friday is a street carnival where folks sip, taste, eat, laugh and mingle. 

This year, Cornucopia is adding more twists to the event lineups. Centreplate is an event for the celebration of 10 years of catering at the Whistler Conference Centre. 10 best dishes over the 10 years are selected: Fois Gras Rillettes, Mac & Cheese Lobster Fritter, Roasted Tofu Lollipops, Tuna Poke with Wonton Crisp, Sticky Pork Belly etc. will be featured. There will also be the innovative Silent Disco, a disco party with a twist where headphones and music from 3 DJs and 3 channels are involved.


To kick start the exciting wine programs of the festival, organizer announced the Top 25 Wines of  Cornucopia 2017. Two BC wines: Top White is Quails’ Gate Stewart Family Reserve Chardonnay 2015 and Top Red is Time Winery Syrah 2013 leading the way. These wines are taste-tested and selected by 11 prestigious judges. You can imagine how fast these 25 wines are flying off the shelves! For those with penchant to advance their wine knowledge but do not want to miss the Cornucopia gaiety,  the accredited WSET Level 1 & 2 courses are being offer on site.
