130 years ago, the anti-Chinese riot erupted. On the evening of February 24, 1887, white labourers arrived in Coal Harbour to drive out a Chinese crew brought in to clear the area of what later would become the West End. The mob attacked the workers, then continued on to Chinatown where they looted homes and set fire to buildings.
This Friday, February 24, 2017 at 7pm at the Roedde House Museum ( built 7 years after the riot of 1887 that happened nearby), there will be a commemorative dinner, hosted by Henry Tsang (Artist & Associate Professor at Emily Carr) - The Unwelcome Dinner, featuring a thematically-related menu prepared by Wesley Young and Jacob Deacon Evans, and conversations with local activist Hayne Wai, Executive Director of Hua Foundation Kevin Huang and Food Critic Stephanie Yuen.
