There is some sort of a food-related “Day’ everyday throughout the year. I guess the ideas come mostly  from trade marketers and retail associations to promote products, events and causes. As a food and wine enthusiast, I have no problem with that.

Past March 27 happened to be the National Paella Day, an excellent reason to enjoy Spanish grubs and wines. The restaurant of choice was Espana Restaurant on Denmen Street and the two wines to go with dinner were from Liberado recently made available in BC. Both wines are available at most private liquor stores and will likely be at BC liquor stores soon.

Originated from Spain, Liberado Wines is well received in Quebec and so they saw this to be the perfect opportunity to introduce these two wines to BC consumers. Meaning liberated, freedom in Spanish, Liberado signifies the spirit of the winery to craft delicious wines with flair and without boundary.

A blend of 80% native Verdejo and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. The idea is to craft authentic Spanish wines but with an international influence. That’s where the 20% Sauvignon Blanc comes from to give drinkers a certain degree of familiarity while being adventurous to try something new. Grapes are sourced from the Vino de La Tierra de Castilla wine region in southcentral part of Spain. Weather is hot in these drylands rendering the grapes to ripe to perfect condition. Verdejo is regarded a native grape in Spain that traces back all the way to the 11th century. This white is light, breezy and bright with lime and citrus in the forefront that follows by a splash of grapefruit and grassy note. There is a bit of minerality in the mouth-feel. With adequate fruit and freshness, the nicely balanced wine is an easy everyday drinker.  



A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Tempranillo, this medium to full-bodied wine marks the cabernet well, displaying aromas of dark plum, blackberries and a dash of dried herbs; while the Tempranillo renders the roasted prune and peppery tobacco hints. Aged in both new and used French and American oaks for 6 to 8 months, the result is a robust wine that is well-structured with gentle tannins. Priced at $15, this is a desirable wine to go with authentic hearty Spanish dishes and barbequed hotties.
