Canadians get the Labour Day long weekend and send kids back to school in September, Chinese has one more important festival to celebrate – the Autumn Moon Festival on September 22 when the moon will be at its fullest and brightest.

Festival meals are always more sumptuous, since most family members will be gathering around the dinner table for some traditional goodies. Afterward, families will go outside in the yard, to the park, or even to higher elevations to grasp the beauty of the full moon. Often, they’ll bring along fruits and Moon cakes and have a picnic under the moon-lit sky while kids walk around with lit paper lanterns. 

Wines to enhance the Autumn Moon celebration?

Sumac Ridge’s Stella Jay is an all-around winner that goes well with snacks, appetizers and almost 95% of the entrees, as well as the intense-flavour moon cakes which are mostly stuffed with sweet paste of lotus, red bean or black bean.

For stews, hotpots and braised meat dish, the 2007 Tinhorn Creek Merlot is always a winner. 

Dessert? The Inniskillin Riesling Ice Wine happens to steal many of our lady friends’ palates.  Sip it on its own or with the moon cake (not recommended for dessert soups).

BC Wine and Producers Dinner at Cibo Trattoria

Black Hills Winery releases 2009 Viognier purchase details 

  • The 2009 Viognier release has commenced and will continue as long as supplies last. There is a very limited production of this wine, and orders work on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Similkameen Wineries Association presents Taste of the Similkameen

What: One of the most popular events for the Okanagan-Similkameen last year was the Similkameen Wine tasting at the beautiful Grist Mill in Keremeos. This historic site with its ample sunshine, fresh air, relaxing gardens of flowers and the reliable early September weather is the perfect location to taste wines and enjoy some of the great locally grown food that the Similkameen is famous for. The wineries will gather on the grounds by the newly restored Mill to share good wine, food and fun for the whole family. Tickets are just $30 and include a lunch of locally grown and prepared food (proceeds supporting the Grist Mill), two wine tasting tickets, a Similkameen Wineries Association wine glass (to take home), live music from the Darylectones and children’s activities. Extra tickets for food and wine can be purchased for $2.50 for wine tasting and $6 for food.

ABOUT THE SIMILKAMEEN WINERIES ASSOCIATION: The Similkameen Wineries Association has formed due to the rapid growth of vineyards and wineries in the Similkameen Valley. Eight wineries have joined together to help educate wine drinkers about what makes the terroir of the Similkameen Valley special and to promote agri-tourism in the region. The Similkameen Valley is growing rapidly as a wine region. Acreage of vineyards has increased from 207 acres in 2004 to over 600 acres in 2010. This rapid growth reflects the re-discovery of the potential for this wine region.
